Job Summary
# Job Summary
This posting will be used to fill a current full-time temporary vacancy within the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay. This position will primarily work the day shift which is 8:00am. - 4:30pm and the evening shift which is 12:00pm-8:30pm. This position is eligible for healthcare benefits.
Designs recreational activities for residents to develop skills identified in the care plan by implementing recreational therapy through games, and leisure time therapy through arts and craft projects both of which increase socialization and interpersonal skills and improve self-confidence and motor skills for geriatric clients. Schedules and conducts activities for residents to constructively use their leisure time during daytime, evening and weekends by arranging attendance at movies, ball games, bowling, and special events. Observes, evaluates and documents resident progress to assess effectiveness of care plan and to suggest the necessary changes by developing an information base (profiling attitudes, attendance, skills learned). Orders and maintains supplies and equipment for activities so that quantities fulfill service needs by measuring inventory levels and preparing requisitions. Inspects equipment regularly to ensure that equipment is operational and safe by testing for mechanical efficiency. Prevents physical injury to residents by defining activity limits, intervening with abusive/disruptive residents, cleaning work areas after programs and by escorting clients to and from activities off and on campus. Completes assessments on all residents. Provide transportation of residents for outings (appointments, supplies, events, ect.) and other transportation as assigned. Other duties as assigned.
## Minimum Qualifications:
* Associate Degree* in Recreational Therapy, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Physical Education, Parks/Recreation, or a closely related field
* Knowledge of or experience in facilitating a recreation program
* Valid driver's license
*One of the following two options may substitute for the Associates Degree: 1) Two years of related post-secondary education, OR 2) One year of recreation programming experience
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience working in long term care
## Physical Requirements
Perform a variety of movements throughout the day such as walking, standing, sitting, bending, twisting, stooping, lifting, carrying, reaching, grasping, pushing, and pulling
## Additional Requirements
This position requires successful completion of the following:
* A Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) background check will be conducted on all finalists for this position. Finalists must pass the DHS background check.
* Finalists will be required to pass a job-related pre-employment assesment.
* Finalists will be required to pass a driver's license check.
* A Tuberculosis (Mantoux) screening (or chest x-ray) is required prior to employment.
* Employment reference checks will be conducted on all finalists. This may include a review of documentation related to job performance. It also includes contact with the applicant's former employer(s).
